A massive boost for Nottingham Forest, a crushing blow for Tottenham. Vítor Pereira's side secured a crucial three points (and denied the Spurs any) with a dominant 3-0 away victory over the London club in a Premier League Matchday 31 fixture.
The significance of this clash was well understood, as it was a direct battle in the fight for survival. Tottenham entered the match in 16th place with 30 points, just one ahead of Nottingham Forest, who occupied the spot below them – the last position outside the relegation zone. Given the importance of the game, home fans rallied to give the team bus a festive welcome.
This game, often dubbed a 'six-pointer' because it not only earns points but also prevents a direct rival from doing so, only saw celebrations near halftime. In the 45th minute, Neco Williams delivered a corner from the left, and at the far post, Igor Jesus silenced the home supporters with a precise header. The visiting side thus went into the break with a lead.
Forest's lead was doubled in the 62nd minute. Hudson-Odoi surged down the left flank, drove to the byline, and set up Gibbs-White, who, unmarked in the box, made no mistake from his teammate's excellent play, tapping in for the second goal. Neco Williams, who had assisted the first, delivered another pinpoint cross in the 87th minute, finding Awoniyi, who finished first-time to seal the 3-0 victory.
Vítor Pereira's team has thus gained crucial breathing room in the relegation battle. They now sit on 32 points, leapfrogging Tottenham, and are three points clear of West Ham, managed by Nuno Espírito Santo, who are currently in the relegation zone. The Spurs, who have collected just four points from their last 12 league games – fewer than any other team in that period – are sinking further down the table.
Nuno Espírito Santo Fails to Capitalize
West Ham, coached by Nuno Espírito Santo and with Mateus Fernandes in the starting XI, failed to capitalize on Tottenham's defeat to climb out of the relegation zone. They remain in 18th place with 29 points, one less than the Spurs. The Hammers lost 0-2 at home to Aston Villa.
The Villans opened the scoring a quarter of an hour into the game. Sancho delivered a free-kick to the edge of the box, and John McGinn struck a first-time shot from outside the area, scoring a magnificent goal. In the 62nd minute, Morgan Rogers led a counter-attack and fired at goal; Hermansen parried it, and with excellent opportunism, Ollie Watkins converted the rebound for the final 2-0 scoreline. A positive result for Villa, who are now fourth in the Premier League, one point behind third-placed Manchester United, who drew 2-2 with Bournemouth, and five points ahead of Liverpool, who lost to Brighton (1-2), and six ahead of Chelsea, who were defeated 0-3 by Everton.
