After securing just one league victory in their previous 28 matches, the Wolves have now stunned Aston Villa and Liverpool in their last two outings, offering their fans a glimmer of hope that Premier League survival might still be within reach. However, realistically, this scenario still feels like a long shot, despite the significant upturn in form for the Molineux side.
Rob Edwards' side failed to register a single shot on Alisson Becker's goal, either on or off target, for 78 minutes. Yet, in the dying moments, they twice breached the Brazilian goalkeeper's net to secure a monumental victory.
Rodrigo Gomes and Andre emerged as the heroes for Wolves, with Mohamed Salah briefly leveling the score for the Reds between those two goals. This result snapped Arne Slot's team's three-game winning streak in the English top flight.
The first half saw Liverpool dominate, though largely only on paper. The visitors certainly had the initiative, significantly more possession, and more attempts on goal. However, none of these efforts were potent enough to seriously trouble Jose Sa.
The Reds squandered their best chance of the match in the 50th minute, and it's truly incredible how they failed to score in that situation. Following a Mohamed Salah corner, Ekitike rose well to head the ball across to the far post, where Cody Gakpo, practically on the goal line, prevented his teammate Curtis Jones from tapping the ball into the net. The Dutchman got his foot in front of a hesitant and indecisive Jones, and the ball ricocheted off him onto the crossbar. The confusion in front of the home goal was compounded by Dušan Krkez, who didn't even see where the rebound landed; otherwise, he likely would have easily guided it into the net.
Another threat to the Wolves' goal emerged in the 64th minute when Ekitike made a good run down the left flank and sent the ball to the far post, but Krejci intervened at the last moment in front of Mac Allister, denying the Argentine a scoring opportunity.
The visitors were punished for their missed chances in the 78th minute when Rodrigo Gomes converted a counter-attack into a Wolverhampton lead. It all started with Van Dijk misjudging the flight of a ball, which then fell to substitute Arokodare. He perfectly set up the Portuguese forward, who slotted the ball past Konate into the far corner for a 1-0 lead.
Liverpool could have equalized in the very next attack when Jose Sa, with his fingertips, deflected Ngmoe's shot onto the post, but in the 83rd minute, there was no saving the Portuguese keeper.
Following a mistake by Bellegarde, a golden opportunity opened up for Mohamed Salah, who found himself one-on-one with the opposing goalkeeper and beat him to level the score, giving the reigning champions hope of a comeback. Instead, a cold shower awaited them!
In the fourth minute of added time, Alisson Becker's disastrous clearance was punished by Andre's goal, securing a victory for Wolverhampton, who refuse to give up in their fight for survival, despite many having already written them off and relegated them to the Championship. Nevertheless, these wins against Aston Villa and Liverpool in their last two games provide a huge psychological boost for Rob Edwards' team and hope that they can achieve the impossible.
