Vollering knows Leerdam from her own days on the ice. The cyclist was a talented speed skater but ultimately decided to fully commit to cycling. That decision certainly paid off, as Vollering is now the Netherlands' top female cyclist. Her career boasts victories in the Vuelta and the Amstel Gold Race, and on Saturday, she added Omloop Nieuwsblad to her impressive palmarès. This win immediately signals Vollering's strong form at the start of the classics season.
'Inspiring' Leerdam
Leerdam faced immense pressure during the Winter Olympics, something Vollering can certainly relate to. "Jutta was under a lot of pressure and scrutinized by many people and the media, yet she was still able to do what she does best. I have a lot of respect for that. I think I understand what she sometimes goes through. It's very inspiring," a candid Vollering told Wielerflits after her Omloop Nieuwsblad victory.
'Immense Respect For Her'
Vollering and Leerdam occasionally keep in touch via WhatsApp. "Sometimes I send her a quick message to congratulate her, because in the past, we trained at the same ice rink. It was very special to see what they achieved at the Winter Olympics. I have immense respect for that."
Jutta Leerdam
The Winter Olympics were highly successful for Leerdam. With a gold medal in the 1000 meters and a silver in the 500, she finally achieved her main goal. Following the Winter Games, she opted to skip the National and World Sprint Championships, bringing her season to an early close. It remains to be seen what Leerdam's future holds, as she has repeatedly stated she doesn't want to embark on another Olympic cycle and wishes to start a family with her fiancé, Jake Paul.
