As the final day dawned, all eyes were on Botman and his rival and teammate, Tim Prins. They were set to battle it out for the Dutch national title and a coveted ticket to next week's World Sprint Championships, also held at Thialf.
World Sprint Championships
Only one ticket for the World Championships was up for grabs. Only the winner would qualify, as the KNSB (Royal Dutch Skating Federation) had already allocated two spots. Jenning de Boo and Joep Wennemars had already secured their places after the Olympic Games, and thus, understandably, did not compete this weekend.
Botman's Consistency Shines
Botman's remarkable consistency particularly impressed NOS analysts Mark Tuitert and Erben Wennemars. "Janno was incredibly steady this weekend and made no mistakes. He finished third, third, first, and second in the respective distances. That makes him a deserving Dutch champion," Tuitert stated.
The final distance was the second 1000 meters, where the Team Reggeborgh skater faced off against Merijn Scheperkamp. "That was a truly beautiful race," Wennemars remarked. "Scheperkamp made a slight error in the inner bend, causing him to lose speed. This meant Janno had someone in front of him at the final crossover. That skater effectively gave him a tow, pulling him along and bringing him inside at the very last moment. This is precisely how you should win a championship."
'Aggressive and Attacking'
The 25-year-old Botman's race strategy also garnered significant praise. "He got off to a great start and was very aggressive from the outset," Tuitert explained. "You need that courage to clinch the championship in the final race. Attacking immediately to put Scheperkamp under pressure." Botman's opening split was 16.2, instantly putting his opponent on the back foot.
Battle with Tim Prins
Scheperkamp's mistake meant he was playing catch-up throughout the entire race. For Botman, it was a significant boost, and partly thanks to this, he edged out rival Tim Prins in the overall standings. "Tim allowed his times to slip too much. He needed to be faster; otherwise, he wouldn't have found himself in this position," Wennemars concluded.
