Leerdam clinched the 1000-meter title in Milan on Monday, fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming an Olympic champion. A day later, another significant wish came true when she purchased her first designer handbag, a rather hefty investment.
'Fashion Icon' Jutta Leerdam
Timmer also saw the images of Leerdam. "She bought a lovely bag, plenty of room for essentials. Well, it's honestly earned, isn't it?" remarked the three-time Olympic champion on the Sportnieuws.nl Dromen van Goud podcast. "It's also symbolic. You can look back and remember buying it then and there."
According to Timmer, Leerdam made an excellent choice by picking a gold-colored bag: "A medal would fit perfectly inside. And everything becomes a matching set, which is always nice, of course. It has to coordinate, and she is quite the fashion icon, after all."
'Sometimes I do that myself too'
The former top speed skater can relate to Leerdam's actions: "Honestly, sometimes I do that myself. Not such an expensive bag, but I think: if I achieve that, then I'm allowed to buy it. As a lasting memory."
Timmer herself won three gold medals at the Winter Olympics, but she never rewarded herself in this particular way. "No, I still had to save up for what I wanted," she responded with a wink.
