American ski superstar Lindsey Vonn has undergone surgery for a fractured leg in an Italian hospital, following a daring attempt to compete in the Milan-Cortina Olympic downhill with a torn ACL that ended in a severe crash.

Vonn is currently recovering at a hospital in Treviso, having been airlifted there after her high-speed fall in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

The helicopter initially transported the American athlete to the Codivilla Putti Hospital in Cortina for an initial medical assessment.

“This afternoon, she underwent orthopedic surgery to stabilize the fracture in her left leg,” stated a press release from the Treviso hospital.

A source informed Reuters that Lindsey Vonn is under observation in the intensive care unit, but emphasized that her life is not in danger.

International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry expressed that everyone's thoughts are with Vonn.

“You are an incredible inspiration and will always be an Olympic champion,” Coventry remarked about the legendary skier.
