In the first half, it was Pep Guardiola's side who looked more dangerous. Erling Haaland had an early chance in the second minute to put the Citizens ahead, but he misjudged his shot, and Alisson made the save.
The visitors from Manchester dominated possession, with the Sky Blues holding the ball for 70% of the time, yet they struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Omar Marmoush had a few chances but couldn't find the back of the net for the Egyptian. The first 45 minutes ended goalless.
Liverpool awoke in the second half, playing with much greater intensity. Ekitike squandered two significant opportunities before Ryan Gravenberch was fouled 25 yards from goal. Naturally, Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up and, with a phenomenal free-kick, scored to make it 1-0.
However, the Reds' joy was short-lived. Erling Haaland headed the ball to Bernardo Silva, and this time Alisson was powerless to stop it. Later, in stoppage time, Alisson fouled Matheus Nunes, and Craig Pawson pointed to the spot. The Norwegian striker took responsibility, slotting the ball into the bottom right corner past the Brazilian to complete the turnaround.
Liverpool pressed relentlessly until the final whistle. Alisson ventured forward, leaving an open goal for City to exploit. Rayan Cherki scored from the halfway line, but then chaos ensued. Craig Pawson spotted Dominik Szoboszlai holding Haaland as the ball went towards the goal. Consequently, City's goal was disallowed, and a free-kick was awarded to the visitors. It was an incredible decision to disallow the Citizens' goal. The Hungarian received a red card as a result of the bizarre situation.
Now, City are six points behind Arsenal, while Liverpool sit 6th with 39 points, four points adrift of Chelsea.
