The winter transfer window has closed, and LaLiga continues to hold the last position in spending among Europe's top five leagues. This marks the third consecutive season for this trend.
Spanish teams collectively invested 75.3 million euros in acquisitions, a sum considerably lower than that allocated by Premier League clubs.
Premier League Remains a Transfer Powerhouse
Indeed, the English championship remains the undisputed leader in investment, having spent 453.17 million euros to strengthen its squads. Furthermore, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 have all surpassed Spain's top flight in terms of funds allocated to market moves, as noted by Marca.
Even so, the total invested by LaLiga clubs is more than double that of the previous season, when only 32.84 million euros were spent. However, the current spending level is significantly below the figures recorded in the 2017-2018 (288.7 million euros), 2018-2019 (114.15 million), and 2019-2020 (162.13 million) periods.
A First for the Spanish Championship
Regarding player departures, LaLiga exceeded the 100 million euro mark in sales revenue for the first time in six seasons.
This move lifted them out of last place among Europe's top five leagues, surpassing both the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. The German championship remains the most modest in terms of winter transfer market earnings.
The highest sum obtained by Spanish clubs from player sales in the last ten winters was 215.08 million euros in the 2017-2018 season, when only Premier League teams recorded higher revenues.
Barcelona and Real Madrid Spend Nothing
During this transfer window, half of the Spanish top-flight teams invested in acquisitions, while nine clubs made no transfers at all.
Atletico Madrid stood out with the arrivals of players, while, surprisingly, the top two teams, Barcelona and Real Madrid, spent no money.
At a European level, Manchester City was the most active, investing 95 million euros for five acquisitions!
