After a relatively quiet driver market for the 2026 Formula 1 season, expectations are high for a much more dynamic market in 2027. Many, including former Aston Martin technical director Dan Fallows, believe that seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton will be the key player in this market.
The Briton joined Ferrari a year ago, but after a disappointing first season with the Maranello team, rumors began to circulate about a potentially swift parting of ways. Unofficial reports suggest Hamilton's contract with the Scuderia runs until the end of 2026, with an option for a one-year extension, a clause entirely at the driver's discretion.
According to Fallows, who spoke on journalist James Allen's podcast, Hamilton's decision—whether to stay with Ferrari or part ways with the Prancing Horse—will be crucial in shaping the driver lineup for the 2027 season. Hamilton's choice will hinge entirely on Ferrari's performance under the new technical regulations, which include significant changes to chassis, aerodynamics, and power units.
“I would say Lewis Hamilton is the key to the driver market,” Fallows stated. “It’s easy to put him on a par with Fernando Alonso as a driver who is obviously very capable, even though he had difficulties last year. He is a driver who can definitely improve his performance when needed. The question for me is, does he have the necessary desire? Does he have the same will to continue for as long as possible if he doesn't have a competitive car? At the same time, Fernando drives many other cars, is still very enthusiastic, has his own karting track and so on. I don't think Lewis is as dedicated to racing in general. This sounds like a terrible criticism of him; he is very dedicated to Formula 1, there's no doubt about that. But I don't see him as someone who would continue to race just because he enjoys it. He wants to be competitive; he wants to be in a car that fights for those wins. I assume he will announce his decision relatively early if he chooses to retire. He will give Ferrari a chance to find a new driver, and I think that will trigger a lot of movement. Ollie Bearman is the obvious candidate for his seat, but there could be others,” Fallows added.
