The fireworks started around the tenth minute at the Etihad, but few could have predicted Manchester City would hit double digits.

Among the goalscorers for City was Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo, who had only signed with the club a few days prior. Semenyo arrived from Bournemouth for 72 million euros, marking the biggest transfer of the winter window.

Alongside Semenyo, goals for City came from Max Alleyne, Rodri, Jake Doyle-Hayes, Tijjani Reijnders, Nico O'Reilly, and Ryan McAidoo. Rico Lewis bagged a brace, while Jack Fitzwater scored an own goal. Exeter's sole consolation came from George Birch.

City last scored ten goals in a single match back in 1987, in a victory against Huddersfield.

Earlier in the day, Macclesfield, a team competing in the sixth tier, pulled off a major upset. They eliminated reigning champions Crystal Palace from the FA Cup in the third round with a 2-1 victory.
