Following Manchester United's 1-1 draw against West Ham, manager Ruben Amorim didn't hide his frustration at dropping another two points in the dying minutes at home. The Portuguese coach, however, insisted that the team isn't regressing in its development.
“We had some good moments, but we lost a bit of control after scoring. We should have closed out the game after going 1-0 up,” the Red Devils' boss began. “The game was under control, we knew that. Set pieces can be an issue. We lost second balls, they were winning duels. We need to control these types of games. We should have been better on the ball after the goal,” he continued.
Despite another game without a win, the fourth in their last five outings, Ruben Amorim felt the team “isn't moving backward”: “When we had our winning streak, we were perfect. We weren't, we were inconsistent. At 83 minutes, the goal came from our own long ball; we had everything under control. There are second halves where we lose control. On the goal, we lost several second balls. We tried to defend high up the pitch because we knew that from a cross, they could win a corner. We need to be better in the second halves,” he added.
Amorim also made it clear that the issue wasn't with the substitutions: “We're losing because of second balls. Sometimes there aren't enough players upfront to win the ball.”
