Ruben Amorim, who became the first Manchester United manager since Louis van Gaal to secure a victory at Anfield, swiftly dismissed his rival's comments ahead of their match against Brighton, as reported by GOAL.
Harry Maguire's late header sealed a 2-1 win for United, securing all three points. Many believe this triumph saved the Portuguese tactician's job, and the Red Devils are now just three points behind second-placed Manchester City, sparking speculation about a potential, surprising entry into the title race.
A last-minute winning goal against their biggest rivals could mark a turning point in Manchester United's season. Not only was it one of the team's best performances under Amorim's leadership, but the fact it came against Liverpool made the victory even sweeter, leaving a bitter taste for Reds' manager Arne Slot. The Dutch coach criticized Amorim's approach, highlighting that his team defended deep, threatened on the counter-attack, and constantly launched long balls forward.
“It's always tough to play against a team that defends in a low block and primarily plays long balls. It's even harder when you're a goal down after just one minute, with one of our players on the ground. If you had told me before the game that we would create so many chances against a low block, against so many long balls, I wouldn't have expected us to lose. But we did. We had enough opportunities to score more than one goal, but on the other hand, we conceded two again, one of which was from a set-piece.”
He reiterated these claims ahead of the match against Brentford.
“The main difference between this season and last is the playing styles we're facing. I watched, during our few days off, how many long balls we've already had to defend – 178 in seven games, and then United came, and we had to defend 59 long balls. That's different from the first half of last season.”
While Slot continued to analyze the defeat, Amorim, at the press conference before the Brighton clash, stated that he had turned a new page.
“Liverpool is in the past, I don't want to comment. It's not important.”
He emphasized that his focus was solely on the next opponent and that the goal was to secure a third consecutive victory, regardless of tactics.
“I understand everything. I'm really pleased that the team can play different types of games. The win against Liverpool was important, but I was the first to say that we need to play better with the ball. That's why I don't care what Slot says, what people say about our team. I can assess my own team, and it's perfectly clear to me that we should play better with the ball. We will try to do that in this match.”
