Nkunku came up through the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain before moving to RB Leipzig in 2019. He has spent the last two seasons at Chelsea. In August, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that Nkunku, who joined the club in 2023, was no longer part of the team's plans.

"Christo is a fantastic professional. The only problem is that we have Cole Palmer in his position, so it was difficult to find minutes for him," said Maresca.
