Newcastle lost their final preseason match before the Premier League kicks off. The Magpies fell 0-2 to Atletico Madrid at St. James' Park. Eddie Howe's side recorded their fourth loss of the preseason.
The Magpies are still without a clear starting striker, with Alexander Isak's future uncertain and the player absent from training. Harvey Barnes led the line today. New signing Anthony Elanga made his first appearance in front of the St. James' Park faithful.
The hosts put together some good passing moves but failed to register a shot in the first half-hour. Atletico patiently waited for their opportunities, and Nick Pope was forced into a key save on one occasion. Shortly after, Joelinton headed wide and then sent a shot straight into the hands of Jan Oblak.
Atletico took the lead in the 50th minute when Julian Alvarez finished from close range after an assist from Marcos Llorente. Diego Simeone's team nearly doubled their lead quickly, but new signing David Hancko couldn't capitalize on a good opportunity. More chances followed for Atletico, leading to a second goal. In the 63rd minute, Antoine Griezmann doubled the visitors' advantage. Emil Krafth advanced and found the Frenchman, who finished with a skillful strike.
